The Kirsch Cup is the club's way of saying "thank you". The tradition is that is it is presented at the club dinner by the out-going holder to the new one. As with the leadership of some political parties, the winner normally "emerges" not being chosen by any formal process - though the existing holder and current committee members have a certain influence.
The award is meant as a gesture of thanks from the club to any member who has either taken trouble to pursue a worthwhile project during the year or has worked quietly on the sidelines for many years with hardly a mention.
