Starting in March 2010 we will be welcoming young riders on many of our existing rides, encouraging them to race and having coaching sessions.
Proposed Sessions
Saturday Riding with the slow and medium groups of the Saturday Ride
Monthly coaching sessions. Cyclo X sessions on Mitcham Common (winter 2010)
Racing on Summer Saturdays
Sunday Dedicated Youth Ride
Wednesday Ride with the Chain Gang/ turbo/roller sessions with HHYCC
Friday Summer Track sessions with the VCL
Youth riders will be welcomed on the Saturday rides and will be accompanied by experienced club members who will not only give loads of advice and help, but also make sure that you are not left behind.
There will be a monthly coaching session where you can practice group riding skills, mass starts, racing tactics and the like. These will be run by British Cycling trained coaches and will take place somewhere near Dulwich.
We can provide an abundance of moral support and individual mentoring for racers, especially at Crystal Palace, Hog Hill and Hillingdon.
Young Paragon members can also join in all the activities of 2 other local clubs, Herne Hill Youth for off road and VCL for track.
Parents- your input is vital to the success of your child’s riding and racing. You are welcome to join in and help. To keep everyone abreast of what is happening and allow you to meet the club, we will be hosting informal bi annual parent’s evenings.

To make this happen the club needs your help….
The Club has the resources to foster a strong youth squad, who will bring us fame and glory, but it will require input from many members.
Recruitment
Spread the word, we need some youths.
Ride Guides
Each ride that young uns go on needs to have 2 adult members to accompany them to make sure that everyone gets back to base. The task is not as onerous as one could imagine, it’s great fun and adds a new dimension to your rides.
Mentors
The club is well endowed with experienced riders and race, I would like some of the more experienced and successful riders/racers to mentor a youth racer
Coaches
To my knowledge the club has 2 BC level 2 coaches; (I and Andy Waterman) are there any others who would like to volunteer to do some sessions? Any club member interested in joining a BC coaching course?
CRB Checks
These are essential to anyone working with those under 18 and frustratingly for those already checked, anyone helping with DP needs to have CRB check done by British Cycling.
I have arranged that British Cycling, via Bill Wright, will sponsor all the DP CRB checks for free. The process is pretty simple, you have to fill in a form, bring along some ID and Manchester does the rest. The most difficult part of the process is to present ID to Bill for him to check, so to simplify this, I will arrange a ‘CRB Party’ at the Dog in January, where there will be lots of forms and Bill will be around to sign them all off. (I will try and tie this in with another social event)
In short, having a youth section in the club will be incredibly rewarding for the youngsters, the club and cycling in general. This is your opportunity to ‘put something back’ in to the sport you all love.
