Here is all the important info you will need to ride this year’s Virtual Ride of the Falling Leaves.
You can download GPX files of the long and the short route here from the links below. If meeting others you are riding with please wait and gather within the grounds of Herne Hill Velodrome (Burbage Road, SE24 9HD) NOT in the street or at the gate. You may start timing from the main gate which is also the location of the first and last checkpoint.
Please do not feel obliged to follow the GPX route between the velodrome and West Wickham / Corkscrew Hill. If you have any alternative way to the bottom of Layham’s Lane that you prefer we would encourage you to use it.
For those riding without any GPS logging there are a number of checkpoints along the route – arrival / departure times at the checkpoints have no bearing on the time you later declare (they simply prove you were there on that day). The checkpoints are at:
- Herne Hill Velodrome START (information board at the main gate)
- Woldingham (book club case on the village green)
- Markbeech LONG RIDE ONLY (beneath the oak, end of Uckfield Lane)
- Velo Barn (corner of Pilgrim’s Way and Westerham Hill / A233)
- Herne Hill Velodrome END (information board at the main gate)
Each will have a QR code which you can scan and then enter your name and Voucher Code. Alternatively, take a selfie with the checkpoint in the background. If you have other means of corroborating your ride (a GPX log, a link to Strava or similar, your mate’s testimony, an affidavit…), feel free to send that in with your ride time in place of using the checkpoints.
Velo Barn are hosting the feed stop. Here you will be able to visit the loo, re-fill your bidon, and grab a coffee and cake – which are on us! Just tell Steve or Mark your name and your Voucher Code and they will tick you off their list. Velo Barn’s cafe opening hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 9am to 1pm (last orders 12:45), but if there are a decent number of riders registered for a particular day we can notify them and they may be able to stay open for longer or on the Monday. Don’t forget to take a mask with you in case you need to head indoors and use the facilities.
Please take care when leaving Velo Barn: we would advise walking along the pavement, hopping on your bike in Pilgim’s Way – on the Velo Barn side – and then crossing the busy A233 with full view of the traffic going either way.
Covid & Safety
Please ride safely at all times and respect all traffic signs and signals. At the time of writing the key Covid-19 restriction we must observe is the ‘rule of 6’ so if you encounter any other groups of riders please make sure that the slower group pulls across and waits for a few minutes while the others pass and ride away. At Velo Barn you may be asked to wait a short while if they are busy and can’t provide the space to keep you or your group separate from others – please be patient.
So that you can enjoy the stop in Velo Barn’s lovely new cafe, so you don’t get stressed with traffic lights and and so you can relax and let others pass, please disregard all stoppage time when declaring your time.
Contact and Questions
If you still have any questions and to send in the time for your ride you can email DP.firstname.lastname@example.org . None of the admin for the ride is automated but we hope to be able to respond within 24 hours.
IF YOU DEVELOP COVID-19 SYMPTOMS WITHIN 7 DAYS OF DOING YOUR RIDE YOU MUST INFORM US SO THAT OTHERS CAN BE NOTIFIED WHO YOU MAY HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH. YOU MUST NOT TAKE PART IN THE RIDE IF YOU ALREADY HAVE SYMPTOMS ON THE DAY.
