We were devastated to learn that Jonathan Gales, a long-standing member and one of our most successful racers, died in a traffic incident in Los Angeles on 19 November.
Jono was a wonderful human being and an enormously talented rider – we all loved his famous victory over a young Ethan Hayter at the Tour of the Hopfields (a National B race) in 2018, alongside numerous other wins and podiums around the London race circuits and Surrey League. This success brought him to the attention of a series of race teams, and even took him to the start line of the 2019 National Road Championships.
His talents were no less impressive off the bike – he was a BAFTA-winning director, creating beautiful architectural films and animations for the production company he founded with two friends.
But most importantly, he was a great teammate, mentor, and friend to many members in the club and he will be hugely missed.
Jono is survived by his wife Claire – also a friend and former member of the club – and 23-month-old son Finley. Their second child is expected in April. We send our heartfelt condolences to them all.
